Grandios und kannte ich bisher noch nicht. Gerade beim zweiten Stück höre ich auch sehr viel ganz alte Queensryche rauch (so ab 0:30). Wäre schön, wenn da noch was offizielles rauskommen würde, insbesondere, wenn die anderen Songs das Niveau halten können.

Weiter gehts mit Valhalla aus der Stahlarbeiterstadt Pittsburgh. Zugegeben, so richtig supertiefer 80er Underground ist das jetzt nicht, aber der Stoff ist dermaßen grandios und sowas von auf mich zugeschnitten, dass ich die Band unbedingt mit auf den Sampler nehmen musste.

Die Band nahm zwar nur eine EP und ein Demo auf, erschuf aber in dieser kurzen Zeit ein paar anbetungswürdige episch angehauchte Nummern. Es gibt nur wenige Formationen und Scheiben, die in der Lage sind diese ganz spezielle Art, ich nenne es mal, Märchenatmosphäre zu erschaffen. Klaro, "On A Storyteller´s Night" fällt einem da natürlich sofort ein, oder aber auch der NWOBHM Geheimtipp "The Prophet" von OMEGA, oder natürlich die geniale "Heroes, Saints & Fools" Platte von Saracen. Und mit jenen Saracen lässt sich der Valhalla Stoff auch ganz gut vergleichen, wie ich finde. Leicht progressiver Metal mit epischen Melodiebögen, einem den Gitarren ebenbürtigen Keyboard, und hier und da etwas schnelleren Passagen. Die meisten Songs gehen jedoch in die Power Balladen Richtung (ohne dabei cheesy zu klingen, deshalb passt die Wortwahl "Power Ballade" eigentlich auch nicht so richtig, aber ich weiß nicht, wie ich es sonst formulieren soll...). Dem hartgesottenen Banger wird das evtl. zu wimpy sein, wer aber Wert auf Atmosphäre, geniale Melodiebögen und einen charismatischen Sänger legt, der ist bei dieser (wie ich finde) US Metal Pflichtscheibe definitiv zu Hause.



Ich hab Originalsänger David Fefolt (u.a. Firewölfe, Forgotten Realm, Hawk und ganz kurz Fifth Angel) angemailt und hab ihm ein paar Fragen gestellt - and here is what he had to say:

When and how was the band formed, who was involved?
In the beginning Ed Horgan(drums), Joe Mutch(bass) and Bill Hornyak(guitar) put together a band in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I believe it was 1978. I got involved in 1980 after a mutual friend gave my phone number to Joe. I went to audition in Ed's dad's garage. I remember being immediately impressed with their musicianship. They were head and shoulders above any of the other local players. I joined right there on the spot!

Tell us something about your influences and how things developed over the years, what was the highlight, what was the lowlight?
We were really impressed with what Queensryche had done on their first EP. Besides that we listened to older stuff from the 70s like Led Zepellin, UFO, Black Sabbath and Rainbow. We were best friends first and band mates second. We really enjoyed hanging out with each other. Naturally that showed in our music and songwriting. We were very inspired. The highlight, I would say, was releasing our album. The lowlight would be letting our drinking and egos get in the way of our music.

Why did you guys split up?
We relocated the band to Arizona in 1985 to be closer to Los Angeles. We thought being in Pittsburgh limited our exposure to record labels and it did. After we moved we found it difficult getting back in our groove and that pressure along with living together began to magnify issues between band members. Of course the increased alcohol consumption didn't help matters.

2001 saw the release of the "Return of the mighty warrior" compilation. Does this cd contain everything Valhalla ever recorded or are there more songs that we don´t know about? In 2001 Ed told greek fanzine "True Metal" that you guys planned recording some new stuff. Why didn´t this happen? Any chances this still could happen?
There are other songs but the recording quality is so poor that they can't be used for a proper release. Most were demo songs never professionally recorded. We indeed did try to start writing new material back in 2001 and 2002 but it soon fell apart. The responsibilities of being married men and fathers doesn't leave one with quite the free time we had back then. I was also working on other musical projects so it just never worked out. I doubt that the original four will ever reunite.

Some weeks ago the Valhalla EP was rereleased from WYLN records. Is there a difference to the mentioned compilation from 2001?
It's the same but now on colored vinyl and cassette. But it is updated with some great old photos from back in the day! Hope you enjoy it!


Damit waäre das auch geklärt, wir hatten es ja erst kürzlich davon im "Neuerscheinnungen 2016" Thread. Die Neuauflage macht Sinn da die 2001er CD nicht mehr so leicht aufzutreiben ist. Vom Original Vinyl ganz zu Schweigen, zumal wir preislich hier in Regionen vorstoßen, die jenseits der 150 Euro liegen.

Anyway, egal in welcher Variante man diese US Metal Pflichtscheibe anbeten will: Tut es, JETZT!!

MONOLIT (Bosnien-Herzegowina)

Ein ganz klarer Fall von "falsche Zeit, falscher Ort" waren die Jungs von Monolit. Obwohl der Wille da war und es nicht an guten Songs mangelte, stellte das Schicksal der Truppe immer wieder ein behaartes Bein. Dass es Ende der 80er in Bosnien Herzegowina eh schon schwer genug war als Metalband Fuss zu fassen, sollte klar sein. Aber die Band wusste instinktiv was zu tun ist und kämpfte sich durch. Dass man dann, als es mit der Karriere endlich deutlich voran ging, jedoch noch mit einem verheerenden Krieg und seinen entsetzlichen Folgen konfrontiert wurde, konnte keiner vorhersehen, und Monolit knickten (verständlicherweise) ein und waren jahrelang Geschichte.

Was verdammt schade ist, denn musikalisch ist das schon ganz cool gemachter Power Metal mit richtig geilen Riffs und eingängigen, meistens einfach gehaltenen Refrains. Der damalige Metal aus Deutschland dient hier als guter Vergleich, wie ich finde. Hört euch mal den unten verlinkten Song an und ihr wisst was ich meine. Einige Songs wird in Englisch vorgetragen, der Rest in der Muttersprache.

Anfang 2006 kam es zu einer Reunion, als Predrag und Slobodan beschlossen, Monolit wieder zu aktivieren. In den Folgemonaten war man damit beschäftigt das erste offizielle Monolit Album einzuspielen und griff dabei auf einige alte Tracks zurück. Die Resonanz, gerade im Ostblock, war positiv, doch leider herrscht seitdem Funktsille im Hause Monolit.

Das heisst fast, denn 2011 wurden die sechs Demotracks von Total Hideous Death Records auf Tape rausgebracht (remastered, limited to 99 copies). 2012 kam ein weiteres Lebenszeichen in Form einer Compilation namens "Deimos Tapes". Als Label fungierte übrigens Mighty Monster Records aus Vellberg, einer Stadt im, ich zitiere Wikipedia, " fränkisch geprägten Nordosten Baden-Württembergs". Enthalten sind natürlich die sechs Demosongs, sowie zwei neuere Nummern aus den Jahren 2006 und 2012. Diese CD möchte ich Interessenten ans Herz legen, wurde hier doch verdammt viel Herzblut vergoßen.



Hier das obligatorische Interview mit Slobodan Emjakovic:

When exactly was the band founded and how did the metal scene in your city look in those days?
The band started in the begining of 1988 in a city called Mostar. Founding members were Slobodan Emjakovic (guitars and vocals), Predrag Glogovac (guitars), Marin Bago (bass) and Zlatko Mehic (drums). We wanted to be the first real heavy metal band not only in Mostar, but also in our area. Nobody there had done this kind of music before so we didn´t really know what to expect and how we should do it "the right way", but we were fully motivated and really believed in what we did. The circumstances were brutal. Our reherseal room was very small and dirty, so we didn´t have the needed space to play and practice the way we wanted. Heavy Metal was total underground in the Mostar area in those days and we had to do all things on our own as there was no really help there for us, but somehow we managed to master this situation and soon we came up with our first songs. Live gigs followed, our following grew from day to day and soon we were a top act in the Mostar area.

Who were your influences?
Our favorite bands were Iron Maiden (of course!!), Judas Priest, AC/DC, Motörhead, Dio, Black Sabbath, Metallica. In our early days we listened a lot to this major groups and they all were influences for our sound. Soon we discovered even more bands that were more underground like Slayer, King Diamond, Crimson Glory, Kreator, Queensryche and Exodus. Although we really didn´t want to copy any of those great band they all somehow helped define our style.

Some of your songs had yugoslavian lyrics, so what exactly did you write about?
Like most young bands of that time we wrote about things like everyday struggles, society´s problems and the endless war between good and bad, we even had some fantasy lyrics on our first demo. At some point we decided to abandon the science ficiton and horror topics as we thought that real life often is the bigger horror than fiction. The music was created by all four of us, but only Zlatko and Slobo were responsible for the lyrics.

You had enough songs ready for a full length debut in 1992 but this didn´t happen. Why?
We recorded our first demo in 1988, our second one in 1990. Each casette contained three songs, so we already had six finished tracks for our first album which was planed for a 1992 release. Some months before that we played a huge festival in Sarajevo in front of 2.500 people so we all were fired up and fully motivated. But things soon got out of our hands as the war started in Yugoslavia. It was a terrible time and the band soon fell apart as two of us left the country to save their lives and two of us had to go to war. Our beloved friend and drummer, founding member Zlatko Mehic died in this war. In 2006 Predrag and myself started the band again and in 2008 we recorded our first official album. On this record we dedicated a song to Zlatko.

Die MONOLIT CD ist, für mich, vom Klang her viel schlechter als das '89er Tape. Keine Ahnung, was hier passiert ist.
Bzgl. VALHALLA hatte ich Kontakt mit dem Drummer und der weiß nix von der Vö, bzw war ziemlich perplex.
Wie es scheint, war das ein Alleingang vom Sänger

ULTIMATUM (Mexiko)

Die Wurzeln von Ultimatum gehen zurück ins Jahr 1984, als die Band noch Equus hieß und progressiven, von den 70ern beeinflussten Rock spielte. Nach mehreren Line Up Wechseln und dem Weggang des Sängers findet man in Marcela Gonzalez eine neue Stimme, ändert den Bandnamen in Ultimatum und versucht sich am im Mexiko immer populärer werdenden Heavy Metal. Doppelläufige Leads und die Powerröhre Marcelas sind von nun an das Fundament der Band.

Die Truppe spielt in den Folgemonaten zahlreiche Gigs und hat schon nach kurzer Zeit ausreichend Songs für eine Platte, kann sich jedoch ohne richtiges Management und ohne Plattenvertrag keinen Studioaufenthalt leisten. 1985 nimmt man am landesweiten Bacardi Youth Values Wettbewerb teil, sticht 13.000 Mittbewerber aus und gewinnt den ersten Platz: einen Plattenvertrag bei CBS. "Ultimatum" erscheint Anfang 1986 und bringt die Band weiter nach vorne. Zahlreiche TV Auftritte und die Teilnahme bei den ganz großen Festivals des Landes sind die Folge.

Ende 1987 setzt eine Halsentzündung Marcela wochenlang außer Gefacht. Da die Sängerin pausieren muss, suchen sich die restlichen Musiker Ersatz um weiterhin live auftreten zu können. Brenda Marin (Abaddon) ist lediglich als temporäerer Ersatz bis zur Rückkehr Marcelas gedacht, aber als diese erfährt, dass die Jungs ohne sie auftreten wollen, verlässt sie enttäuscht die Band. Marin hilft bei ein paar Gigs aus, hat aber keine Lust auf die zahlreichen Verpflichtungen abseits der Bühne, denen Ultimatum mittlerweile nachkommen müssen. Marin wird nach ein paar Wochen gegangen und Salvador Aguilar von Megaton wird als neuer Sänger engagiert. Aber auch er passt nicht so richtig zur Band und man wechselt wieder zu einer Dame am Mikrofon. Diese hört auf den Namen Cathy Miguel und diesmal scheint es zu funktionieren. Mit ihr spielt man dann auch die zweite Platte "No Te Detengas" (1989) ein, korrigiert dabei jedoch den musikalischen Kurs. Wo beim Debüt noch pfeilschnelle Doppel Leads und richtiger Metal herrschten, dominierte nun der melodische Rock das Geschehen. Nicht schlecht gemacht, aber eben nicht das, was die Fans erwartet hatten. Die Scheibe blieb hinter den Erwartungen zurück und Ultimatum lösten sich auf.



Ich hab Sängerin Marcela Gonzalez kontaktiert und ihr ein paar Fragen gestellt:

Is it true that the band discovered you while you were doing an acoustic gig in a mexican bar?
Yes, it is. I have dedicated all my life to singing. When I started, most of the time I was singing pop and rock songs in bars, accompanying myself with my acoustic guitar. Always since I was a little girl, I liked music, no matter if it was pop, rock or even heavy metal. So when the guys saw me performing in that bar, they asked me if I wanted to join. I wasn´t really sure, so we rehearsed two or three times and it worked out pretty good. So I joined the band and together we tried to reach the next level for Ultimatum.

How did the early days of Ultimatum look like? What helped you reaching that next level?
Oh, we played a lot of concerts in Mexico and also did some tv shows, just check them out on youtube. So our playing got tighter and tighter, but we couldn´t afford studio time to record an album as we always were short of money. That was depressing but our courage kept us alive and we continued touring the country. But when we won the famous Bacardi Youth Values contest everything changed. We were invented to even more and much bigger festivals, tv shows and radio shows, so we became more and more popular and one day we got offered a record contract from the CBS company. The hard work finally did pay out and we entered the studio. The band started getting bigger and bigger, at least in Mexico.

In late 1987 you had to leave the band. What were the reasons?
Well, here is the true story: They didn´t fire me. I decided to leave the band because they didn´t want to wait for my recovery from a serious throat infection. I couldn´t sing or even speak for weeks, so I wasn´t able to perform. They said that my replacement was only temporary, but it hurt me that they didn´t want to wait until my return. I always thought that the five of us together were Ultimatum, in good and in bad days, and noone else So I left and they continued with another singer. They also changed the style of music.

Enough negative stuff. What positive things come to your mind when you think about your time with the band?
What comes to my mind now is the happiness I felt each time we played together. We were like a brotherhood. When we played our music on stage, the spirit, the heart and the soul were put together and I still have goosebumps when I think of this days. I remember a festival in Mexico City where we played in front of 250.000 crazy people. I mean, how can you not like this kind of memories.

While doing some research for this interview I discovered that Ultimatum are back....
Yes, we are back. Jesus Jimenez, the owner of mexican record label Sade Records, who by the way rereleased our first album some years ago, brought us together. Last december we had our official reunion gig in Mexico City and it was one hell of an evening. It sounds like a stupid cliché but the magic was back the moment we entered the stage. Besides that, we will continue rehearsing, playing and even writing. So there probably will be another Ultimatum album. Look out, amigos....

Dies sind nur grobe Entwürfe der Tracklist in (noch) alphabetischer Reihenfolge. Einige Songs werden noch rausfliegen, viele andere werden noch dazukommen, da wird sich noch einiges tun bis zur finalen Auswahl. Ich muss bzw. will mich noch durch hunderte von Songs durchhören, da gibt es noch einiges zu tun. Beim US Metal werd ich wohl noch eine zweite CD hinzufügen müssen, bei der NWOBHM wahrscheinlich auch. Da gibt es einfach viel zu viel gutes Material. Cover und Booklets sind auch schon in Arbeit, aber auch da bin ich noch nicht zu 100% zufrieden - stay tuned!!
