I got in touch with Katon about releasing the 1984 demo on vinyl through Stormbringer last year. To my surprise he was totally into this. I'm sure you're familiar with some of the comments Katons has made about this recording in recent years, that's why I was surprised he wanted to do it.
Unfortunately nothing came out of this as I got tired of waiting to hear from him, which I only did a couple of times. I decided to get in touch with original Hirax guitarist Bob Savage instead. He liked the idea. The first thing we did was to let Katon know we were talking about releasing this recording. He clearly told Bob these songs are as much his as they are Katon's (Bob wrote all of the music with Katon doing the lyrics) but he didn't want to personally involved.
Looks like Katon has changed his mind since. I misunderstood the "not wanting to be personally involved" part and posted a flyer for the release on his MySpace sites, just to let him know the record was ready in case he wanted some copies. Normal reaction would be to mail me telling that he didn't want me to advertise through any of his sites and of course I would have respected that. Instead he claims this 7" is a bootleg which of course is 100% bullshit since it's made with full support from Bob who wrote all of these songs.
Too bad it turned out this way, but since Katon won't reply to the mail I sent him, there's nothing I can do. I can't figure out why he was totally cool wit this release one month and then a couple of months later when it's ready all of a sudden he's not!
